Pinewood Derby

Rules

All cars must pass inspection to qualify.

The car weight shall not exceed 5.0 ounces. The official race scale shall be considered final.

The overall length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.

The overall width of the car shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches.

The car must have 1 ¾ inch clearance between the wheels.

The car must have 3/8-inch clearance underneath the body.

Previously used cars are prohibited. Cars must be made from the kit provided by the Pack specifically for that year’s race.

The wood provided in the kit must be used. The block may be shaped any way that is desired.

Only official BSA Pinewood Derby wheels are allowed - check out scoutshop.org if you would like to use different colored wheels . The wheels may not cut, drilled, beveled or rounded. You may remove the seam from the wheels.

The axels supplied with the kit must be used. They may be polished or lubricated.

The axel slots for the wheel in the block must be used. In the event a slot is damaged a new axel hole may be drilled directly above the existing axel slot. All 4 wheels must touch the ground.

Wheel bearings, washers or bushings are prohibited.

The car must not ride on any type of springs.

The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices.

A flux capacitor must not be used. Hyperspace drive is similarly prohibited.

No loose material of any kind, such as lead shot, may be used.

Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it will be allowed to compete. The Inspection Committee has the responsibility to disqualify those cars that do not meet these specifications.
